Ashdown Arts Winter Art & Craft Exhibition

5th & 6th December 2015

Eleven members and one guest took part in the Ashdown Arts Winter Art & Crafts Exhibition. The layout adopted was agreed in advance to allow plenty of space for visitors to view exhibits, to allow a seating area close to the bar and a work table where visitors and exhibitors could take part in the SAA World Record Painting Event. Any boards not taken specifically were used to show additional artwork from those taking part.

Advance publicity was included in among others Ashdown Living, Forest Row News, RH18 and on Meridian Radio.

Seasons gave support to the private view by providing Christmas Biscuits but Ashdown Arts and members provided Mulled Wine, Sausage Rolls, Mince Pies and other savouries. All visitors were provided with one free drink supplied in a hand-made mug which they could buy.

Around 50 visitors came to the private view and 220 over the Saturday, but Sunday visitors were a disappointingly low 30 (all numbers including children).

Children particularly liked the work table and over 30 works by adults and children have been sent to SAA. All the entries in the visitors book were positive with comments such as “Beautiful Paintings and Art Work”, “Such variety well displayed”, “Well put together” “A very varied and interesting exhibition”. Work by Doran Scotson, Don Collishaw and Annie Mills was singled out for specific comments.

Doran Scotson, as usual had a number of sales including copies of his annual calendar. Cards of Lily Kendrick’s new work proved popular and there were some sales of craftwork and cards. Don Collishaw sold one new work but otherwise, despite many positive comments, there were no art work sales. For the future the challenge is to encourage more visitors coming to buy rather than view art.

Ashdown Artists Visit the Battersea Affordable Art Fair

Saturday 14th March 2015

Several members of Ashdown Arts (+ guest) went to the Battersea Affordable Art Show yesterday – yes it was Friday the 13th, however as far as I am aware no disasters befell our little adventure. Train connections went smoothly and the weather stayed dry.

The exhibition (located in Battersea Park) showed the work of about 1,100 different Artists with a wide range of styles and skills from Paintings and Graphic work to Collage and Illustration to Ceramics and Glass work.  Rather than go round in a group we arranged to meet up in the centre for a drink and chat about the works that had stimulated us so far – Ken had seen some pottery characters – each had their own story attached and quite a collectable already, and I had been captivated by some blown glass.
After the show the group went on to look for other galleries to view – I had to come home and got a little lost on my way back to the station – but thankfully made it back in time for the four 0’clock dead line.

Cost wise we did well: as there were a number of us we were able to make use of the group ticket saver and Ken had acquired some free tickets to the exhibition – so a bonus all round.  The facilities were good, the exhibition easy to negotiate, and the stall holders friendly and very helpful.

The next show I believe is in October – it will be a different set of Artists as the Galleries are now allowed to show the same Artist twice in one year – for more information about the show visit affordableartfair.co.uk  and put the date in your diary for our next adventure to Battersea.
